Circular Economy in Korea and in Germany:

Recycling and Reuse of EV Batteries

Batteries are critical to a clean energy transition worldwide. As global battery demand both for traction batteries in electric vehicles and for industrial batteries is soaring around the world, a safe, circular and sustainable battery value chain is becoming ever more important. Raw materials are limited and their extraction and refinement is associated with environmental cost. Therefore, mitigating the environmental and economic impact of battery production requires controlling the conditions of mineral extraction, minimizing energy use and chemical waste, and maximizing reuse and recycling. Likewise, high social standards need to be respected along the value chain.

The recycling and the reuse of large traction and industrial batteries will be instrumental in securing the sustainability and competitiveness of battery value chains at global scale. In this context, we will discuss the policies and strategies of Korea, Germany and the EU, learn from each other through practical application cases and plans of companies and institutions, and exchange ideas for further cooperation.

배터리는 전 세계적으로 청정 에너지로의 전환에 매우 중요합니다. 전기 자동차의 배터리와 산업용 배터리 모두에 대한 글로벌 배터리 수요가 전 세계적으로 급증함에 따라 안전하고 순환적이며 지속 가능한 배터리의 가치 사슬이 그 어느 때보다 중요해지고 있습니다. 원료는 제한적이며 추출 및 정제는 환경 비용과 관련이 있습니다. 따라서 배터리 생산의 환경 및 경제적 영향을 완화하려면 광물 추출 조건을 제어하고 에너지 사용 및 화학 폐기물을 최소화하며 재사용 및 재활용을 극대화해야 합니다. 마찬가지로 가치 사슬에 따른 높은 사회적 표준을 준수하여야 합니다.

대형 전기차 및 산업용 배터리의 재활용 및 재사용은 글로벌 차원의 배터리 가치사슬의 지속가능성과 경쟁력을 확보하는 매우 중요한 역할을 할 것입니다. 이러한 맥락에서 저희는 이번 컨퍼런스를 통해 한국, 독일 및 EU의 정책과 전략에 대해 논의하고 기업 및 기관의 실제적용 사례와 향후 계획을 통해 서로에게서 배우고, 더 많은 협력 아이디어를 교환하고자 합니다.
